It may seem like using Ayurveda to heal Hashimoto’s is an unusual choice. But for me, it feels like the most logical one. For those of you that don’t know what Ayurveda is, it is an ancient Indian medical system (over 5000 years old), and the sister science to Yoga. While modern medicine is ever-evolving and changing, Ayurveda has stood the test of time.
What Drew Me to Ayurveda To Heal Hashimoto’s
I actually studied Ayurveda as a part of my yoga teacher training, so I feel like I already have a good foundation of knowledge and trust in Ayurveda. Many other things I have read about that help with Hashimoto’s seem in line with Ayurvedic principles, so me, it feels like the logical step for me.
What I love about Ayurveda is that it’s all about balance. When looking at an Ayurvedic diet, there is nothing you can’t eat. But there are foods you shouldn’t eat together, and there are better times of the day to eat them than others.
For example, it’s never a good idea to eat a flaming hot curry at midday in the middle of summer. That’s too much heat right there!
Some Ayurvedic Basics
I’m going to go really simple right here, I’ll write a more detailed guide to Ayurveda soon.
In Ayurveda there are 3 doshas
- Vata
- Pita
- Kapha
Vata = ether and air. Vata is responsible for energy and movement. The main systems ruled by Vata are respiratory, circulation, digestion, and speech.
Pita = fire and water. Pitta is all about our metabolic processes. It also rules our temperature, hormonal balance, hunger, thirst, and intellect.
Kapha = earth and water. Kapha unites and regulates. It’s associated with heavy, slow, dense, and cold properties. But Kapha is responsible for solidifying all of the body structures and regulating the bolts fluids.
So what does all of this have to do with Hashimoto’s?
According to Ayurveda, Hashimoto’s is an imbalance of Vata and Kapha. So to reduce my symptoms I need to get them back into balance. Again, I’m going to go much more into this later as I get further into my personal Hashimoto’s healing journey.

Working With An Ayurveda Practitioner
Every person is different. And Hashimoto’s will present differently in everyone. This isn’t a one-size-fits-all kinda disease. So to that effect, the treatment is also very different for each person.
Things that may work for me, may not work for you. It is for that reason that the best way to treat Hashimoto’s with Ayurveda is to work with a professional. I’m going to be taking this journey with my good friend Clare from Clareminded.
We actually met just last year in Mexico through a mutual friend with who I did my Yoga Teacher Training. Clare was the obvious person to support me in my healing. Although there are many things you can try alone, that may work. I would always recommend consulting with a health professional first.
How Do You Find Balance
Once you know what the imbalances are, and what is causing them to go out of balance, it’s time to figure out how to get everything back in balance. There are many ways to do this in Ayurveda but the main ways are through diet, yoga, and spiritual practice.
All of which I will of course be doing, and recording, over the coming months.
