Spending the night in a real Tudor castle has been on my UK bucket list for years, so when I had the chance to stay at Thornbury Castle, I knew it was going to be something special.
Nestled in the Gloucestershire countryside, just a short drive from the Cotswolds and Welsh Borders, Thornbury Castle is the only Tudor castle in England open as a hotel. With a history that includes Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn, luxurious rooms, and award-winning dining, this isn’t just a hotel—it’s a full experience.
If you’re looking for a romantic getaway, a historic adventure, or just a night of pure indulgence, this is the place.

Arriving at Thornbury Castle
From the moment we arrived, it was clear that this was going to be a stay like no other. The castle’s grand stone walls, turrets, and Tudor gardens immediately transported us back in time.
Check-in was smooth and welcoming. The reception team greeted us warmly and personally escorted us to our Castle Suite, giving us a mini history tour along the way. Their hospitality set the tone for what would be an incredible experience.
Even though we visited in January, and the gardens weren’t at their best, they were still beautifully maintained. I can only imagine how breathtaking they must be in spring and summer!
A Stay Steeped in History

Thornbury Castle has a history that is as grand as its architecture. Built in the 16th century, it was once owned by Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn, who actually stayed here in 1535. Walking through the same halls and gardens as Tudor royalty was surreal.
There are 26 unique bedchambers, each designed to reflect the castle’s rich heritage, with four-poster beds, stone walls, and period furnishings that make you feel like you’ve stepped back in time—but with all the modern comforts you’d expect from a luxury hotel.
Before our stay I was actually a little worried it was going to be a bit cold and drafty, January in England after all! But I couldn’t have been more wrong. It was so warm and cozy, especially wrapped up in the fluffy dressing gown.
Our Castle Suite

We stayed in one of the Castle Suites, and I have to say—it was one of the most unique hotel rooms I’ve ever stayed in. The moment we walked in, I was in awe.
- A grand four-poster bed that made me feel like royalty.
- Rich, Tudor-style furnishings with stone walls and period details, adding to the historic charm.
- A well-stocked mini bar, complete with chocolate treats and complementary sloe gin. Even though we don’t normally drink alcohol, we made an exception—and I have to say, it was wonderfully warming on a chilly evening.
But the real showstopper? The bathroom.

A huge freestanding bathtub, a luxurious rainfall shower, and a space that felt more like a personal spa than a hotel bathroom. I was so glad we had booked an early dinner because, honestly? I couldn’t wait to get back to our suite and indulge in some serious self-care time.
As a mum, I can never go to the toilet alone, let alone enjoy a long, peaceful soak in the bath (fellow mums, I know you understand!). But here, in this gorgeous bathroom, I finally had some quality time to myself, and it was absolute bliss.
And then came the best part—I slept for nine uninterrupted hours.
I genuinely can’t remember the last time that happened—definitely not since before having children! The bed was huge, soft, and unbelievably comfortable, and with the thick castle walls keeping everything silent, I drifted off effortlessly. For the first time in years, I woke up feeling completely rested and refreshed.
I felt like an actual princess, waking up in a Tudor castle, wrapped in sumptuous bedding, with the morning light streaming through the historic windows.
Dining at Thornbury Castle
Afternoon Tea by the Fire

After settling in, we made our way to one of the castle’s cosy lounges, where we enjoyed a pot of tea and gourmet popcorn by the fire. It was such a simple but perfect moment—relaxing in a historic setting with crackling flames and plush armchairs.
Dinner – A Fine Dining Experience

Thornbury Castle is known for its exceptional dining, and it did not disappoint. The restaurant holds 3 AA Rosettes for food quality and offers a six-course tasting menu, à la carte menu, afternoon tea, and lounge menu, all crafted under the expertise of Executive Head Chef David Williams.
We opted for the three-course à la carte menu, and every dish was a culinary masterpiece. The ingredients are locally sourced, with many coming straight from the castle’s own kitchen garden, where they grow Tudor botanicals and fresh produce.
Breakfast – The Perfect Start to the Day

After my blissful nine-hour sleep, I was more than ready for breakfast, and it did not disappoint.
I ordered the full English, and Carlos went for the fluffy pancakes—though calling them “pancakes” is an understatement. They were huge, more like an actual cake than a stack of pancakes. Thick, golden, and piled high, they looked absolutely incredible.
As for my breakfast? Perfect. Every element was cooked to perfection, but the poached eggs stole the show—perfectly runny, just the way they should be. Paired with freshly brewed coffee and a relaxed, elegant atmosphere, it was the ideal way to start the day before exploring more of the castle.

Unique Activities & Things to Do
One of the things that makes Thornbury Castle so special is the range of activities that truly allow you to immerse yourself in Tudor history. While we didn’t have time to do them all, guests can book experiences like:
- Archery & Clay-Pigeon Shooting – Channel your inner Tudor noble.
- Falconry – A rare chance to get up close with majestic birds of prey.
- Croquet on the Lawn – A classic British pastime.
These activities are available with prior notice and are an additional cost, but they make for a memorable experience.
A Fun Personal Touch – Dressing Up as Henry VIII & Anne Boleyn

One of the absolute highlights of our stay was dressing up in period costumes as Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. If you stay here, I highly recommend doing this—it was hilarious and made the experience even more fun.
There’s something about walking through a real Tudor castle in full costume that makes you appreciate the history even more.
A Surprising Family Link to Thornbury Castle
After posting about my stay on Instagram, I received a message from a good friend who saw I had visited Thornbury Castle. She told me that her uncle (by marriage) was none other than Kenneth Bell, a former owner of the castle!
Kenneth Bell (1927–2021) was a pioneering chef and hotelier who played a major role in shaping modern British fine dining. A graduate of the Lausanne Hotel School in Switzerland, he worked at The Old Bell in Malmesbury and The Elizabeth in Oxford before purchasing Thornbury Castle. He was instrumental in bringing French and Mediterranean cuisine to Britain after WWII and transformed the castle into a renowned fine-dining restaurant and hotel.
Under Bell’s ownership, Thornbury Castle became much more than a historical landmark—it was a culinary destination. He established a vineyard and piggery on the grounds, opened the first guest rooms, and laid the foundation for the luxury retreat it is today.
It felt surreal knowing that this beautiful place we were staying in had such a direct connection to someone linked to my friend’s family. It added another layer of depth and appreciation to our stay.
Final Thoughts – Is Thornbury Castle Worth It?
Absolutely. Thornbury Castle isn’t just a hotel—it’s an experience. From the stunning historic setting to the luxurious rooms and incredible food, every moment here feels special.
